Choosing to be optimistic in the face of the Met Office forecast ( if the Queen can go out in the rain, then what's a bit of cloud), I was all ready for a window of opportunity. Tripod ready to go, PST fastened to quick release head, a couple of eyepieces, black hood in jacket and thermos ready to be filled. If it's looking good, will drive to higher ground. Very early to bed, read for a while then nicely asleep. Suddenly awake when phone rings, son calls for chat. Read for a while, back to sleep. Suddenly awake when NASA Mauna Kea website comes to life with music and loud voices. Watch this for a short while, then make a big mug of tea. Read for a while, then nicely asleep. Awake again when tea works its way through, so up about 0230, and there are lots of clear patches with stars. Optimism. Watched transit on website for a bit. Read for while, then nicely asleep. Awake about 430, nothing visible except cloud. Back in to bed. Around 0515 looked out again - veiled Sun glowing through a few gaps in thicker cloud. Think about it for a moment, then back to bed. Read for a while. Transit observation non event. Looked at various photos on web with pleasure/amazement/envy. By way of consolation, the rain has stopped, some of the sky is blue, and I've just had a short session on the PST, some nice features visible.
